TODAY IN HISTORY




1st February 1958. Egypt and Syria were proclaimed "United Arab Republic" and ratified in nationwide plebiscites (vote) later that month (on 22nd precisely). The Marriage (Union) ended when Syria, following a military coup declared her Independence from Egypt. Egypt continued to use the United Arab Republic name until the year 1971.
